“By all means use Amazon – they have amazing selection! – But there’s no need to be a tacky jerk to your neighborhood store in the process. Unless that store is a Wal-Mart, Target, or American Apparel, in which case go to town (by which we mean, go out of town).”
In other words don’t be a tacky jerk to the people we like. Be a tacky jerk to everyone else. Seriously people? How about we don’t be tacky jerks at all?
I love big box stores, and eBay, and Amazon cuz they get me the stuff that I want and they get it to me cheaper. Local mom and pop shops are cute but they ALMOST ALWAYS cost more. Buying something at the lower price is just good common sense.
They curse Amazon for being smart and trying to grow their business. But people forget that a successful Amazon means a larger Amazon which means they need to hire more people to work at Amazon. In other words success for Amazon means more jobs for middle and low class Americans. Furthermore, the more stuff Amazon ships means more jobs at places like UPS FedEx and the US Postal Service.
This is capitalism people. He who comes up with the most successful business model, wins. The other guy goes out of business and their employees find work at another company that is growing. If mom and pop want to compete with the big box stores and the internet, then they better find a good model based on higher quality goods, better service, or some kind of gimmick; because if not then they depend on pity, entitlement and guilt trips rather than productivity and ingenuity.
Is that what we are now? A country where pity and self-entitlement come before resourcefulness and innovation? I sure as heck hope not.

That’s what I posted on Facebook. But as always…I have more to say.
If you want to help out mom and pop because you like their stuff then great, do it. But trying to tell people who have never been there that they owe them some kind of support or something just because they are from the same town…that doesn’t make any sense.
Near where I live there is this hot dog joint call JDawgs. And JDawgs is GOOD stuff. Everyone loves it. The place is busy all the time. And even now, in the middle of ridiculously complicated and hard economic times, JDawgs has expanded to a larger location and then just recently opened a second location. Why? Because JDawgs is AWESOME. They don’t only have a great and simple menu but the environment is fun and unique. Now I’m not saying all of this because I want to promote JDawgs, (honestly I don’t think they need it) but because this is a good example of a successful innovative small business that can succeed all on its own without villainizing competitive chains like Wienerschnitzel, or those sketchy guys with their hot dog stands outside of Home Depot and Lowe’s stores.
I get soo tired of people talking about companies like Wal-Mart and McDonald’s like they are these evil empires out to ruin the world. Wal-Mart wants to sell you stuff cheaper than the other guy. They want you to come to their store and like it, and then come back again. They want to open new locations and make more money. Yeah that’s right MAKE MONEY.
OH NO! They can’t do that! Making money is BAD! We can’t let Wal-Mart make lots of money! All those rich bankers and Wall Street Executives are big fat jerks and terrible people because they have lots of money!
But I have news people: When Wal-Mart grows, so does our economy. When Wal-Mart makes money, they open new stores and employ more people. When Wal-Mart grows, you get more stuff at lower prices. The list goes on but as you can tell, generally terrible things happen when successful stores become more successful…
Now I want to clarify that I don’t think it is ALWAYS good for companies to grow. There are points when things need to be regulated and maintained. For example there are only 4 major cell phone companies left in the US: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon; and as they merge (AT&T is currently trying buy T-Mobile and Verizon plans to go after Sprint in the next few years) there will be less competition. Less competition means that if AT&T makes me mad my only choice will be to go over to Verizon, because they will be the only company with similar choices (and with similar terrible customer service). Lack of options also means higher prices, because they can charge whatever they want since you have nowhere else to go. It basically comes down to a monopoly, which also does not work well with capitalism.
If you like your local mom and pop shops then great; eat their food, wear their clothes, and use their products, but don’t specifically do it to tear down other businesses because you think they are too big or any of that crap. You can’t blame them for trying to make money and trying to grow their business. If it were your business, and you had hundreds or thousands of employees who depended on you for their livelihood, and thousands of customers trying to stretch their paychecks just a bit further, then you would do whatever you could to get ahead too.
